In 1939, young men from the ages of 18-25 left their kids and wives behind to face the Nazis at their front door.
Vianne says goodbye to her husband as he leaves for war. Before his departure, he gave her some money to take care of their daughter Sophie. As the years fly by, all the money is gone and the food is extremely scarce. When a Nazi soldier randomly appears at their front door announcing that France is now occupied and that he will be staying in their homes to spy on them, Vianne would do just about anything to protect her sister, Isabelle, who's a member of a secret resistance group and keep her daughter away from harm even if it means losing a big part of herself
Ok, so why is this book so great?
It's great because it makes you want to have a double personality. You longed to be Vianne because you wanted security, to lay low, to not cause any problems in order to keep your family safe, but at the same time, you wanted to be Isabelle, the rebellious girl that saves lives of many, denouncing the injustice that the Nazis were inflicting on people, protecting the innocent... And that, for me, is absolutely amazing.
Furthermore, the writing was so lyrical and so damn beautiful. I am in love with it. So many feels.
I think that many times, when we talk about WWII, it's always about the Jews and the concentration camps, but never about the other people from the other countries that suffered also. Therefore, it was really refreshing to see it for a change. It makes the books stand out and that's a very good thing when you're an author.
If you were disappointed with All the Light We Cannot See, then I promise you that this one will make you feel a lot better. Definitely recommend. You won't regret it.
